The Inspiration
Our lives have become busier, more virtual and less connected. More and more people are experiencing, and struggling, with daily anxiety. Whether we like it or not, this fast-paced lifestyle seems here to stay and all we can do is find ways to manage how we move through it. We realised there was a desperate need for a product that could assist with anxiety management and stress relief on-the-go; something that was both high-quality and specially designed.
We wanted to create a product that had real industry knowledge behind it, something that was proven to work. After long car conversations and many casual brainstorming sessions, it felt like there was something serious here. We wanted to do this, but more importantly, we felt that we needed to produce a range of products that would actually help people. And so, Star & Co was born.
The Creation
After spending our first year living in Bali, we were blown away by the kindness, generosity and hospitality of the community. The Balinese people have deep-rooted skills in craftsmanship and astonishing attention to detail, it is home to some of the finest silversmiths in the world. Choosing Bali as our manufacturing destination was simply a no-brainer.
Through meeting some good people, plus a bit of sheer luck, we found the right company to help us on this journey. We have been lucky to form a wonderful, valued and trusted relationship with them. Without their dedication to our vision, and their commitment and expertise, Star & Co would not be possible.
The Journey
from Idea to reality
Starfish
It all started with a family connection. Kirstie is the proud owner of Starfish, a successful and reputable business that specialises in educational and sensory-focused resources for children and adults, both with and without disabilities. When Billy, Kirstie’s son and former carpenter, began living overseas, she offered him a wonderful opportunity to try a new career helping her run the ecommerce side of the business remotely. Billy took to the challenge and thrived, learning new valuable skills each day. During the pandemic, Billy’s partner Sacha jumped on board to lend a hand. Kirstie, and her industrious employee Ellie, held down the fort in the physical store in Shellharbour, NSW.
A pandemic-move to Bali
In an attempt to make their way back to Australia from Europe, alongside a few visa complications, Billy and Sacha found themselves inadvertently living in Bali. During this time, they were able to immerse themselves in the Balinese community, learning about the culture and traditions that encompass this unique island, which Sacha and Billy now call home.
The Light Bulb Moment
A year on, the Starfish team were all together in Sydney, running a stand at the disability expo. Alongside many specialised, niche products being showcased that day, one particular item seemed to be flying off the shelves: anxiety rings. After some conversations with show-goers, the team quickly realised there was a need for a product more specialised and specifically designed. Something that would help to relieve symptoms of stress and anxiety, in a safe and non-harmful way. It was clear that these products would need to be both high-quality and durable, ensuring they would stand the test of consistent usage over time. After an excitable car journey home, bouncing ideas off of each other, the team brainstormed the idea for a company that would do just that.
Designing & Manufacturing
Ellie and Sacha quickly got to work bringing this brainstorming session to life. With Ellie’s experience in-store at Starfish and her love for jewellery, alongside Sacha’s experience writing blogs and product descriptions for the online store, they took on the task of designing a range. They met every week on Zoom, discussing ideas and possible designs to transform into a real life Star & Co collection.
After finding the top manufacturer in Bali through Billy and Sacha’s connections, the designs began to take shape. From paper sketches, to 3D designs, and then holding real life samples in hand to ensure each movement was just right. This final step was crucial, and each piece can equate to a year’s worth of work!
Launch
After many tweaks, changes and revisions, by 2024 everyone felt that Star & Co was finally ready to launch into the world. The team wanted their products out there helping people, and hope that their care, attention and dedication shines through in each and every piece. The work hasn’t stopped behind the scenes, as the Star & Co range is set to grow and expand over time, continuously adding diversity and variation to the collection. Just keep watching this space.
